The buzz about the recent awards show was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team might be designing a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
