The Substance Film
Director Coralie Fargeat's unflinching satire tackles the oppressive nature of women's appearance along with the feared consequences of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers an inspired performance as Elisabeth, a mature film star forced into starring in a fitness program on television. Pushed out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and terrifying procedure known as the Substance. This generates a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in a steadily more vampiric relationship among both women. Friday 17 October, Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10
This Agatha Christie-esque thriller stars Knightley playing Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for some time off from reporting on global conflict to board a luxury cruise with a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and philanthropist, her partner, plus additional affluent guests. Yet once an unknown lady goes overboard one night and all passengers denies she ever existed, her journalistic curiosity take over. Available now, Netflix
Presence Film
Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills through this nifty supernatural story captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. As a family including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the lens – representing the ghost – follows them around. The daughter appears aware of the ghostly being, and it seems defensive toward her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation you might not see coming. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel
This Self-Referential Film
Cage fully commits to his cult stardom via this self-referential adventure. He plays a narcissistic film star called Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to visit a festive event at a Mediterranean location for billionaire superfan Javi. Hired by the intelligence agency to investigate the potential kingpin, the actor's unique performing skills comes in handy. This Saturday, evening, on Channel 4
The Black Phone
The director's locked-room horror stands strong despite the lack of a follow-up. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of child abductions has made the children frightened. When Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a dungeon, he fears a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line on the wall continues to ring, with ghostly voices offering help, while the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen might rescue him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, late evening, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for materialism in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top true story about the fallen televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who states initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple set about capitalizing on the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of tacky decor, bad makeup and hypocrisy, however Chastain manages to show the character in a likable light. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, on Film4
Black Bag
This week's additional entry from the filmmaker is a spy mystery as sharp similar to the collars worn by the actor's British agent. He receives a mission with uncovering a double agent within their ranks out of five possibilities – among them is his spouse. The two stars are experts of understated style, leading to a delightful psychological game of deception or honesty takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
