Colombian President Says 'I Would Return to Arms Once More' if US Invades.

The US President and President Gustavo Petro have intensified the volume of their war of words, heightening strains between the two countries following American military units attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates drug factories and production sites and his time is running out," Trump remarked.

Escalating Rhetoric coupled with Accusations

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, the US president hinted at comparable armed intervention against Colombia, claiming Colombia is “very sick too” and governed by a sick man who enjoys creating the drug and distributing it to the United States."

Although Colombia stands as the world’s largest source of the narcotic, there is no evidence that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally connected to the illicit industry.

A Deteriorating Relationship

The country was historically a staunch collaborator of the United States in the struggle against drug trafficking and benefited from bipartisan support in the US capital, but relations have deteriorated markedly following Trump came to office.

Its narcotics trade is largely controlled by illegal armed groups including the Golf Clan, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and dissident factions of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members demobilised after a landmark accord.

The President's Firm Rebuttal

When asked if a military operation comparable to Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump said: "That seems like a good idea to me."

Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who left armed struggle in the last century, rejected these allegations. "I am neither illegitimate and certainly not a drug trafficker," he stated.

"He comments without information. End the false accusations," he expressed in a post.

"Should American forces attack peasants, they will transform into numerous insurgents in the mountains. And if they detain the nation's leader, whom a significant portion of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will provoke the powerful force of the people," the president cautioned.

From Fighter to Leader

Petro spent some years as a young man belonging of the leftist M-19 armed organization though it is believed he did not participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he was involved in drafting the nation's constitution in the early 90s subsequently becoming a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of the capital city prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I swore to never again hold a weapon again ... but for Colombia I shall resume arms again," he vowed.

Heightened Measures along with Widespread Condemnation

Colombia's defense chief stated that the president’s security detail had been reinforced.

A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with the US president, however, leaders from all sides of Colombian politics have condemned the notion of an invasion targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Economic Pressure

American authorities revoked the president's entry visa following he urged American soldiers to disobey any illegal orders. In October, it placed economic restrictions targeting Petro, his wife and various close collaborators.

Simultaneously the US was building up its troop levels in the Caribbean and targeting suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed operations against vessels in the eastern Pacific region near Colombia.
